Fishing Overview

  • Flows: 870 cfs
  • Water Temps: 40s (℉)
  • Clarity: 5in visibility
  • Nymphing: Great
  • Dry Fly: So-so
  • Streamer: Good
  • Weather: Sunny. AM: 40s/50s. PM: 70s/80s & windy.
  • Lower River Guide Trips: Yes, just ask your guide!

Summary: Fishing is good! The flow increase has the water murky with larger, high-vis flies working well. The bump has temporarily slowed dry fly fishing. Streamers are still working.

Flows ramped up to 870cfs, but don't worry the fish are still eating. With no major rain the forecast, we expect the flows to stabilize and water clarity to improve. The 870cfs release it to meet water guarantees, and it will likely go down in a couple of weeks. Don't let the low clarity scare you; just think bigger and brighter. Instead of tiny size 22 midges in black, think red larvae in size 18, San Juan Worms, eggs, and leeches. Err on the side of using a bit more weight and distance between your first fly and your indicator to get those flies down to the fish. Streamers in higher-visibility colors are still working well. The big bump in flows slowed dry fly fishing, but we expect it to pick up in the next week or so.

How Each Section is Fishing

The Quality Waters

Overview: Fishing has remained good despite the increase in flows and the drop in water clarity, with sub-surface techniques being the most productive. Dry fly fishing was temporarily affected by the flow increase and has been slower, but we expect it to pick up as things stabilize over the next week or two. Streamer fishing is still good in this section. Worm imitations, egg patterns, bright-colored larvae, bunny leeches, and flies with some flash are still productive.

Tips/Technique: Nymph rigs with fluorocarbon tippet are the name of the game right now. Since the water is off-color and the fish won't see your leader as easily, 4x and 5x tippet are fine. With the recent flow increase stirring up the river, the fish are eating high-visibility patterns: larger red larva, San Juan Worms, eggs, and leeches. If fishing streamers, use brighter colors and fish them deep. Despite the temporary lull in hatches, the Baetis are still active subsurface in the afternoons, so look for fish eating gray, olive, and brown mayfly nymphs in riffles, tailouts, and faster water.

The Lower River

Overview: The flows for this section are great and likely a little lower than 870cfs given the irrigation draw on this section. The water is also clearer here since it's had more time to settle. Last week Caddis were coming into play, but the increase in flows temporarily slowed dry fly fishing for a week or so. Streamers and nymph rigs are still working well.

Tips/Technique: For this week the techniques aren't really different than the Quality Waters section. Last week's bump in flows from 350cfs to 870cfs has caused all sections to fish similarly with similar patterns. Across the board lots of bigger, chunky food got loosened and the trout are enjoying it.

The Village

Overview: Fishing here has been consistently good. We're seeing less Baetis action.

Tips/Technique: For this week the techniques aren't really different than the Quality Waters section. Last week's bump in flows from 350cfs to 870cfs has caused all sections to fish similarly with similar patterns. Across the board lots of bigger, chunkier food got loosened and the trout are enjoying it.
