Quick Fishing Overview

  • Flows: 250 cfs
  • Water Temp: 40s (℉)
  • Clarity: 5ft visibility
  • Nymphing: Great
  • Dry Fly: Great
  • Streamer: Decent
  • Weather: Clouds & sun w/ some rain. AM: 50s. PM: 60s/70s.
  • Lower River Guide Trips: Flows likely too low. Ask front desk.

Summary: The big change is lower flows! We went from around 850 CFS over the weekend to just 250 CFS, and the fishing has been great! The weather's been pretty awesome too. Highs in the 70s with some cloudy days have made for some of the biggest BWO

hatches our guides have seen on the San Juan. The guides have joked that dry fly fishing might not even be worth it because, when the cloud cover is just right, there are so many bugs on the surface that the trout may not bother with yours! It's also been tough to distinguish your fly from the others. That said, not every hatch has been that thick, so you're still in luck.

Detailed Report by River Section

The Quality Waters

Overview: This week is definitely different than last week's report. Lower flows have got the fish focused primarily on midges below the surface, with dry fly action happening in the afternoon when there's cloud cover. At 250 CFS, expect fish to be more concentrated and visible. Many areas that were previously too deep to see the bottom are now clear all the way through. Take advantage of the sight fishing. We've seen lots of trout feed off of weed beds, which tend to be sources of drifting midges. Black has been a great color. Try a size 22 Big Mac or your favorite black midge emerger. The trout haven't been too picky about the exact fly. A good choice for a second fly is a size 22 Chocolate Fluff Baetis or RS2. Otherwise, if a hatch comes off, have sizes 18–22 of Comparaduns, Griffith's Gnats, and Parachute Adams.

Tips/Technique: Especially with this drop in flow, the fish are midging shallow in the water column. Don't mistake a tail brushing the surface for a rise. Many trout are looking down and eating midges just 4 to 6 inches below the surface. If you see this kind of behavior, switch to light, shallow rigs. Tiny indicators placed just about 6 to 8 inches up, with little to no weight, have been the ticket.

The Lower River

Overview: The drop in flows may have made this section un-floatable for now, which is the only way it can be fished. A couple of our guides are going to go down this section to check things and report back to us for the next fishing report. Stay tuned for more news.

Tips/Technique: TBD. We'll see what our guides report back!

The Village

Overview: The fishing in this section has changed slightly as well. The fish are also a bit more focused on bugs, much like in the Quality Waters. Rather than some big attractor pattern like a San Juan Worm, try a size 18 Pheasant Tail to a black or gray midge or Baetis pattern. Something with some gold rib or flash wings is the right amount of "hey, look here." Size 18 to 22 is good. Should a hatch come off, fish the same dry flies as in the Quality Waters.

Tips/Technique: Last week we were saying to fish the less-fast water in fast, deep runs. With the current a lot slower than last week, go ahead and fish the main fast water of a run rather than to either side. With slower water than before and less depth, the trout should be congregating in the main current of deeper, faster runs now.
