FISHING REPORT 2011 was a great year, especially good for dry fly fishing. We have fished dries almost every day since March. Cartoon hoppers or “toons” were our go-to fly on tough days, Bubba Smith now has 12 patterns available through Orvis. Fisheads has a large inventory of the Cartoon Hoppers as well all locally tied patterns (made in USA). New Mexico Game & Fish Department have done some fish habitat improvement to the "Braids" in the catch and release area above Texas hole. This work took most of the month of November it started in Rex Smith arroyo by the Texas hole parking lot by building a stilling basin to keep the sand out of Kiddie hole and the rest of the river. November 1st the river flow was reduced to 350 cfs to allow the construction work to continue into the river, the San Juan River flow will increase November 31st to 500 cfs as the construction is done. Then the no-fishing area will be opened to all us Fisheads. Plan a trip soon to fish this new section, the crowds of the early fall are gone and usually the weather will hold up until late-December. Fisheads everywhere are excited about the improvements to that section of the San Juan, it is a very nice area that will fish better with more current and deeper pools. The fly shop has a new manager, Peggy Harrell-Nesbit. Most of you know Peggy as a guide and expert on equipment, flies and San Juan River fishing techniques. She is always willing to share her knowledge with beginners or seasoned anglers alike.
Nicole Bridge has received her captains license and is our guide dedicated to Navajo Lake. That, coupled with her pro bass fishing experience, make her the best choice. She will guide you out of her Ranger Bass boat for Carp, Pike and Small mouth Bass.
